This is Me: Ty Simpkins

Ty Simpkins, Zooey Magazine Meet Ty Simpkins. If you live in a big city like Los Angeles, where there are always tons of movie billboards, then you already know him. He's stared you down as you drove on Sunset Blvd. for his "Insidious" movie poster. It was scary. Really scary. But meeting the star himself was a relief! Ty is just a regular 12-year-old who happens to know and work with A-list stars like Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Avengers) and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids). And he plays a lot of video games. A lot.

His next film "Insidious: Chapter 2" is out on September 13th, which is the sequel to "Insidious."

Ty Simpkins, Zooey Magazine

Ty, at such a young age, you have already starred in great movies such as "Gardens of the Night," "War of the Worlds," "Iron Man 3," and that¹s just to name a few! What do you enjoy most about acting and why?

Yeah, I think I've been in like 15 or 16 movies. "War of the Worlds" was my first movie. And they are not all as big as "War of Worlds" or "Iron Man 3." Some films I got cut out of, and some like "Gardens of the Night," (that's really, my sister Ryan Simpkins' movie. I just have a small part in that, so I am not really starring in it. But it¹s a really important film. (I actually haven¹t seen it, but I know what it's about!) and parents really need to talk to their kids about 'stranger danger!'

I love almost everything about acting! What I like most is I have clear mind when I¹m working, like being free. Everything is already usually set in the script, and the set is ready, the location, wardrobe, and directors are all ready, and then when I walk on set - we make movies! I like that everyone¹s job is important too. Even small stuff that most people don't even realize someone painted or designed. I love the words "action!" and "checking the gate!" What I don¹t like is hair and make-up. I love the people who do that job. It's just my hair grows fast and it's a lot of haircuts sometimes, which means having to sit still.

Ty Simpkins, Zooey Magazine

Can you share with us, what has been your favorite project to work on so far? Every project is always so great when working on it, and I always have great things I remember from each film - so I know that¹s kind of a cheesy answer but its really true. But if I had to pick just 1, it's totally "Iron Man 3!" I mean, who wouldn't want to be in a super hero movie! Ever since I was little I was telling our agent, 'I want to be in an action film, a super hero film - can we do that?' And then bam! Iron Man 3! It was, well it is total awesomeness! And I know I'm lucky.

Who is your biggest inspiration as an actor and why? So many and to pick one. I'd say I have three. First, Harrison Ford. When I was little I would watch "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" over and over. I know both film series pretty much by heart and he has really cool characters in both, and recently I¹ve been addicted to "42." I mean, he still has it. That¹s a really long cool career. He's just a great actor. And then there is Johnny Depp. "Pirates of the Caribbean" just might be my favorite film series. I mean I like him in lots of his stuff, but what I like is the way he creates his characters. It's got to be so fun. He is like a live action cartoon. And last but not least…Robert Downey Jr. Obviously I know him more then Harrison Ford or Johnny Depp, but Robert really inspires me. He's kind and caring. And when I am with Robert I have a feeling of just being safe. Robert's character building is amazing, examples: "Chaplin," "Sherlock Holmes" and the Marvel films. He's just awesome. He¹s the acting God.

Ty Simpkins, Zooey Magazine

Now we loved you on "Iron Man 3." You had such great chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. What made it so easy for you two to work together? I think that was the "safe" feeling. Like, we just connected. He's really helpful and when I couldn't say this tongue twister thing he totally helped me, and in the edit you would never know I couldn't say "retro reflection panels". Also, Robert told me I reminded him of him, and that my confidence was what he was looking for (even though I was a little in shock my first day on set). Robert just made me be awesome. He knows how to make everyone feel comfortable.

Well, while we do love your character on "Iron Man 3", we must say that your role on ³Insidious² is completely horrifying in the best possible way! Is there anything you can tell us about your next appearance as Dalton on "Insidious 2"? Sadly, I can't tell you anything about "Insidious 2." Sorry! But I think people are going to like it. I like my character, Dalton a lot, and I love working with Patrick Wilson who plays my dad. Aka: Josh. Patrick is another guy I know I work so well with. He's played my dad three times. Twice in "Insidious" and in "Little Children" when I was three. I hope every every years I get to be in movies with him.

You have experience in quite a wide range of genres including horror, drama and action. What do you enjoy about each of them? And do you prefer acting in any one to the others? I think I love the action stuff best because I get to be strong and in control and a hero. That's just really cool you know? And the drama stuff, I'm actually really good with the slow pace, and I just feel what my character is going through I think. As for horror. I love being part of "Insidious" 1 and 2, but to be honest, I really get into my character, and I really am scared. I used to think 'I don't know if I need to do another horror film, they are too scary, but then I think about it and the scared feeling really is kind of fun. If I could only remember that when I'm filming 'This is really fun. This is really fun, this is really fun!' But my imagination just gets in my way.

Ty Simpkins, Zooey Magazine

Where do you see yourself in the next five years as an actor? I never really think about my future and where I might be in five years. I mean, I'm still a kid and I'm in school, and the way we do it now is, I audition and I forget about it, unless I book, then I travel, and film, and when it's over I go back to school until the next one. But none of that was ever really really planned. I mean, seems like for me and my sister it's kind of easy. She works - we all go. I work - we all go. So I said I was in like 16 movies, right? Ryan's been in about the same I think. But we've gone to each other¹s sets so we really have been in like 32 movies. Kinda.

Is there anything besides acting you could see yourself getting involved with as a career? I always wanted to be an archeologist like Indiana Jones. Or a pirate like Jack Sparrow, or a genius billionaire like Tony Stark. I also think being a sea explorer or scientist would be awesome.

Ty Simpkins, Zooey Magazine

I heard schools back in session, and in order to take a break from class work and your career, what hobbies do you enjoy during your spare time? Yes. I'm back and school and I started a new school this year and I¹m in 6th grade. My school is so great! It's a really long day but I don't even seem to mind. But in my free time I like hanging out with my friends, I like playing the game Star Wars Old Republic. I take an improv class and I play cello. I kinda take Tae Kwon Do when I can, and I want to get back into fencing and ice hockey but I'm sort of out of free time.

Can you tell us about any future projects you have in store? I have a couple. We are still waiting on funding for "Conversations with Andy," which I am really excited to film. It's about a kid whose parents are going through a divorce and the kid (me) gets advice from Andy Warhol. And something I can't talk about until it¹s announced, which will be so awesome when it happens. They have to work out some stuff I guess. But oh it would be amazing! Thinking optimistically! It's what I do!

Day in Fort Wayne

We're the Ihrie's - a spontaneous, fun having, fit-throwing, and cuddle loving family from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Thrifting, creating, baking, and DIY-ing is our sort of thing. Our ultimate dream is to renovate an old school bus or vintage camper and travel the country. We (Mom and Dad) own a rapidly growing photography business called Della Terra Photo. Photography is what we love to do, and it is so rad that we get to call that our "job". Capturing our life in images is so important to us, because we do try to go out of our way to do crazy and fun things with our children--we want them to remember that. In this post, you won't see anything spontaneous or exciting. This part is just us being "normal" - if that's ever a word that could be used to describe our family. Morning

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Here's the hard part. Trying to get out of bed in the morning and only running on a few hours of sleep, because we (we being Tarah and Josh - aka Mom and Dad) have been up editing photographs all night. It's so hard to ignore the awesome sound of laughing kids--and then that inevitable scream of terror because "he/she is touching me." Usually it's because of "she."

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Our morning's usually start out by Maxx (3-years-old) stealing someone's phone, or rolling over to him playing his online learning games on the computer. The kid loves technology.

Little miss Eila (2-years-old) usually starts and ends her day with a bath. Do not ask how it's possible to get that dirty--just accept that it is, in fact, possible. She loves to watch herself talk in the mirror. We don't know how this started, but it is literally the cutest thing ever.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Now comes the part where we chase Eila around for twenty minutes trying to get a diaper on her. Sometimes the floor gets the worst end of that...literally.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Art is something that we push very hard on our kids, and the awesome part is that they love it! It is amazing to watch them be so artistic and imaginative...even at such a young age, but then again, with weirdo parents like us, you kind of have to be.

Afternoon

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

We took a stroll downtown to grab some lunch. While on our way, we noticed a man taking a photo of the cityscape behind us and thought "there's nothing that interesting back there". We turned around and noticed a huge cloud of smoke and explosions (you can see it in the background of this image)...an old warehouse had caught on fire and the cars that was inside of it were exploding!

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Pint & Slice is one our favorite spots to grab a bite to eat with the kids. Everyone knows us there - therefore, we don't have to worry about our ridiculously energetic kids running around like a pack of deranged hyenas.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

This is the calmest you will ever see our kids in a public environment--and it lasted a whole thirty seconds.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

To us, this is what makes up for all of those hard days and fights between our kids--seeing them love each other unconditionally. It is so incredible and heartwarming.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

We're at the zoo! It is very convenient to live a few streets away from one of the best zoos in the country - we can't get enough of it!

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Yuck! Goosebumps appear every time they must drink out of that god-forsaken 'lion.' Germs, germs, germs!

Night

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

The usual mad-dash to the grocery store before dinner which always results in someone breaking down. We try to feed our kids completely organic (and locally when we can). Oh, we forgot to mention that we are also vegetarian! Our kids have never consumed meat a day in their lives...even while in Mama's belly!

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Frantically cooking enchiladas before our friends arrive for a combined family dinner! We are never on time.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Our great friend Jennifer helping us finish up our dinner setup. Eat your heart out Mexico!

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Enjoying the great company of some great friends--otherwise heard as the guys talking about motorcycles and us moms yelling at the kids to sit down and eat their food.

Zooey Magazine, Blogger

Ah, bath time - savior of the day! Off to bed we go, and then up in the morning to do it all over again--but we would endure that kind of awesome chaos any day.

This is Me: Manny Montana

Manny Montana, Zooey Magazine Manny Montana stars as Johnny Tuturro in USA's "Graceland," an undercover FBI agent who works alongside other agents from the DEA and the ICE. Manny sits down with us for a conversation and a shoot to accommodate!

Let’s talk "Graceland."  It quickly became a very popular summer series due to its unique premise, and smart casting. What do you enjoy most about working on such a great drama?

Honestly, my cast mates! They are freakin' hilarious!! We were never not laughing and joking! Even when things were hectic on set and we were against the clock it was always fun!

Can you talk about landing the role on this show and a bit about the audition process? Did you do anything unique to show you would be perfect for the role?

It was crazy! From the moment I got the script I felt like it was mine. And I say that with no bravado or arrogance. It just left like it belonged to me. But the process itself took so long! I think I had about six to eight auditions! When casting a show I guess the network just really wants to make sure they're casting who they feel is the right person. It was hard but I'm so glad it worked out. Being on a show like "Graceland" is literally a dream come true.

So tell us more about Johnny.  What makes him tick?  Does it take you a while to get into character, or is he very natural for you?

Johnny is just a really fun character to play. He's always in a good mood and very upbeat, but he's also extremely sensitive so it makes for a lot of great layers to play. My cast mates and the writers are so amazing! No character stays the same. Everyone is always evolving and you never know who to trust! I'm a genuine fan of the show and think we can go far! Honestly, 'Johnny' and I are very different but also very much alike so really it just depends on the scene and premise to figure out how long it'll take to get into character.

Manny Montana, Zooey Magazine

I’ve read that you have always been interested in careers that, maybe I would say, are reserved for dreamers. Tell me about the moment, or series of events, that led you to realize acting was something you would be so passionate about?

I was in college at football practice and my shoulder had just dislocated for the 8th time. I knew I had to make a change. I made the 6 hour drive from Sacramento back home to Long Beach, and decided if I was ever going to chase this dream I've put off and been so scared of for so long, now's the time. The rest is history.

What three words would you use to describe your personality, and why?

Tough. Sensitive. Giving. It's just how I was raised. I have such a big family and have always been around so many people that I think you just inherit so many different characteristics. So I think I took a little bit from everybody. But I was always taught to be a giving person. It's just always feels like the right thing to do.

Any personal ambitions yet unattained? Directing? Producing? Writing?

Oh most definitely! Producing is really on the forefront of my mind. The longer I'm this business the more the idea of putting something together and making it fit like a puzzle is so appealing to me. I want to be a producer on "Graceland" but I really want to understand the position, not just have the credit. And from there expand into movies.

Manny Montana, Zooey Magazine

Now tell us, what are some of the things you are just obsessing over right now? TV Shows, Books, Twitter?

I watch an incredible amount of TV (laughs). I'm so serious, I am and will always be a genuine fan of this pretend world! "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," "Parks & Rec," "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," and "Arrested Development!" I could go on forever! (laughs) No matter how much is going on in my life I always make time to watch my shows. It's my therapy.

What do you enjoy doing on your days off to just get away?

Well we shoot in Florida, so that means I'm 3,000 miles away from my family and friends back home in Long Beach. So if I'm not hanging out with one of my cast mates I'm either working out, at the beach, or just at home reading getting ready for the next day. It's a great life!

Manny Montana, Zooey Magazine

Can you tell us about any new projects you are working on?

I just got off the set of the Untitled Michael Mann Film. It was a very small role but I just couldn't pass up the chance to work with this legendary actor who I've been a fan of since I was a kid! Other than that, I'm just hunting for the next gig and praying I can work on "Graceland" for several seasons more!

For all the dreamers out there still working towards their goals, what advice would you impart to them?

Listen to your own intuition! You're the one that has the dream. You're the one that feels it in your bones that this is what you're meant to do. Follow that intuition. Don't listen to people that are in the same beginning stages as you tell YOU what's best for YOU! I know it's cliche, but there's only one you in the world. Be that unique person and shine that light.

Just for fun:

a. The last movie I watched was… "This is the End." That movie had me in tears I was laughing so hard! b. My mama always told me... Being average is boring. c. I couldn’t live without… Football. It's my first love and I love everything about it. d. What makes me laugh is… My brothers. I laugh harder with them then than any other time in my life! There are certain life long inside jokes that only someone with siblings can ever understand.
