Say 'Hello!' to Katie Evans

Katie Evans is a graphic designer, an illustrator, and all round charmer. Luckily for us, her work is just as charming as she is. Combining corporate success with true pencil to paper artistry, Katie holds integrity and an admirable passion for her craft. Positioned at ‘kate spade new york,’ her designs and illustrations embellish all kinds of clothing and accessories. Her almost iconic work for the label presents her own personal quirkiness, yet still retains the elegance of the global brand, while her personal work playfully illustrates the world around her. She adds current trends and a fashionable edge to timeless style, and all of this synergy extends beyond her professional work, into exciting blogs and an Etsy store. Living and working in NYC, she lives and breathes the liveliness shown in her work, the same energy you get just by talking to her.

How would you describe your work and style? My work is lighthearted and colorful with a bit of sass. I like to draw silly things and make ordinary objects exciting. I’m attracted to bold colors (lots of them!) and graphic prints. I enjoy mixing patterns and getting a little kitschy in my accessories.

How would you describe your creative process? I start by researching and pulling inspiration relating to the assignment. This is one of my favorite parts of the process because I get to spend time looking for beautiful imagery, sexy typefaces, innovative packaging etc. After that I do a lot of hand-sketching to work my ideas out on paper. Sometimes I have to get through the bad to get to the good ones, and sometimes I get a happy accident that evolved from something totally random. Then, I pick my favorites and present them to the client. We’ll brainstorm together and evolve a couple of the favorites, and then I’ll further the develop the ideas until we pick one to move forward with.

Where does your inspiration come from? I love going through vintage fashion and travel magazines from the 60s. They are full of interesting campaigns and editorials. The copywriting is very entertaining, and the graphic design style from that era is one of my favourites. Another source of inspiration is the people around me - at work, on the streets, sitting next to me at a bar. It’s everywhere if you know how to look for it.

Who has been most influential in your creative life? My parents were the ones who encouraged me to enter the poster drawing contests in elementary school. That is one of my first memories of being an artist. They supported me through middle and high school art auditions, and then again through college applications. My parents taught me about working hard and giving something your all to get to where you want to be, and make things happen for yourself. I’m also creatively influenced by my coworkers at Kate Spade New York. I work with such a talented team of designers, directors, and writers. There are so many different skill sets and personalities, and when you put us all together we’re a dream team. That may sound corny, but it’s so true.

If you could peek into the studio of any artist (dead or alive), who would would you choose? Charley Harper! I’m obsessed with how he captured the essences of his subjects with the fewest possible elements. His animals are incredibly beautiful and made of simple shapes and textures. I’ve always admired his style.

What is a day in your office like? A day at ‘kate spade new york’ is crazy and full of excitement. One of my favorite things about working there is that I get to wear a lot of hats. My days are never the same, and I am always being challenged in different ways. I could go from meeting with our fashion accessories team to plan a new season’s tech products, to brainstorming an ad campaign. It’s always changing and keeping me on my toes.

How do you get out of your creative ruts? If I’m struggling to work out my ideas, I take a walk. Looking at the computer all day can be hard and exhausting. Being able to break away and walk around the block helps me recharge. Sometimes that walk leads me to the park where I people-watch, and sometimes it leads me to the ice cream parlor down the street.

When you’re not working - what are you doing? My fiance, John, and I moved into our first place together last summer. We’re slowly making our apartment feel like us, and finding furniture that we can both agree on. I also like to bake in my pint-sized kitchen. I enjoy the mixing and stirring and then anxiously waiting for it to be finished. John proposed this past November and we are knee-deep in wedding business, but we’re enjoying planning the biggest part of our lives.

Tell us about your your Tumblr and Etsy store - how did these things come about and how do they differ from your professional work? My Tumblr is a gallery of illustrated moments in my life. I started it because I wanted to develop my illustration style more fully, and I needed a new channel that would give me the opportunity to experiment. I get illustration work at Kate Spade New York, and in my freelance jobs, but I wanted to take it even further. It’s a place for me to try new styles and get a little more playful than I usually do. My Etsy shop came after Tumblr. I found myself with all of these fun illustrations that people were enjoying and I wanted to give them a chance to like it in a different way. It spans from stationery to custom illustrations.

What does it feel like to see your creations on clothing accessories and in windows all around the world? It’s hard to describe, but it’s one of the coolest feelings in the world. My favorite moments are when I pass someone on the street with something I designed. Knowing that girl felt a connection with something I did, loved it, and had to buy it, makes me feel so happy. I am very proud of what I do, and when I see other people excited about it too, it makes it even better.

What are your plans for the future? One of my goals for this year was to set more time aside to work on fun personal projects. I think it’s important to give yourself that time to explore something new that makes you happy. I am also working on planning my wedding. I’ll be designing everything paper related, transforming the space, and possibly dipping my toes into floral arranging. We’re trying not to get caught up in it and just enjoy it all.

Do you have any advice for budding artists? Put yourself out there as much as possible. Get on all the social media platforms and keep your website current. If the right person notices it, it will make a big difference in your career path. I would encourage new artists to experiment and find a style that feels unique and true to themselves. Doing something you love will only make you a stronger artist. It will show in your work, and other people will be able to see it too.

10 Things about Jessy Schram

Jessy, you are in "Falling Skies" - a show loved by many fans. Understanding that the show is produced by Speilberg, the name itself gives the show so much prestige. What did you think about the show before even stepping foot into production? Were there things you learned from the show that you didn't know beforehand? Things about the cast, the crew, the show itself? Or even career lessons in general.

In the past I've always said, 'That's it! I'm going on vacation- I'm out of town- booked out! Unless Spielberg calls...' I had just been offered my first TV movie and was supposed to be on a flight to Chicago the next day, when the audition came in with no script attached. DreamWorks was producing with TNT and I fell in love with Karen from the few pages I had on her. I had taken a chance by declining the movie just to audition for "Falling Skies" and rescheduled my flight. It's not often you get to play a dirt bike riding, scout in a post apocalyptic world. Yes, there is a romantic relationship that happens, but there's a story of survival and purpose that overrides chasing after a boy. It's not often roles come along that don't include falling at the foot of a love interest or that TNT and DreamWorks give you an opportunity.

The process of making "Falling Skies" has been going on for about 3 years now, though you've only begun seeing the 2nd season, it's taught me so much about being part of a television series, the entertainment business and most of all myself! I've been able to grow as an actress with being able to hold onto a character, and from the support of the entire cast. I have a profound respect and admiration for that cast and crew. That cast is genuine.

So 10 Things is about figuring out who YOU are. Tell us, what is something that people don't generally know about you? Whether big or small.

I'm a wanderer. I love to walk. I will walk for hours and never even go into a store or sit down. If given the opportunity and time, I'd walk everywhere.

What place in your everyday life would you describe as the most YOU besides your home?

My car. It's where I've spent most of my time from a young age- so I think there's something comforting about it. Half my day is spent in it when in LA - so you get to see me. Messy yet organized, efficient without being fancy and available at all hours for car dancing and jam sessions on the steering wheel.

Everyone has pet peeves. What are things you just detest?

Someone mentioned to me that people cutting finger nails in public was their pet peeve and I have to say, I was standing next to someone recently boarding a plane and she cutting her nails. One hit me. I didn't enjoy that. I [also] detest being around people who have a sense of entitlement they use to put themselves above others. And guilt trips. Using guilt trips knowingly is selfish.

If you were to be in a band, any band whether still active or not, which would it be and what instrument would you play?

Oh there's not one answer for that! I'd like to BE Joni Mitchel or stand in on a session with The Doors to experience Jim Morrison. I'd like to be part of the Civil Wars (Joy Williams and John Paul White) and use my voice to create the duets they do. Play guitar and make people dance like Rodrigo y Gabriela or play and write like Dylan or Ani DiFranco. But stick me in the Jackson 5. They're one of a kind and posses an odd circus- like feel to their life and work.

Do you happen to have any odd tendencies that your friends or family have noticed?

I'm told I text like Yoda.

Your top must watch shows this fall are...

"Last Resort." "Once Upon A Time." "Two Broke Girls."

What are five things that are a must have when you travel?

5 things when I fly around; My cell phone, iPad, sketch pad, scarf and a piece of paper with my favorite prayer.

What is your ideal romantic date?

Something random and simple. To me, a romantic date is when you get to experience the person, be together. The setting just helps bring out the nature of each other. Cooking, getting canvas and painting, dancing in the living room, shooting things at an arcade, jumping in the ocean, watching a movie... It's romantic if its personal and you can be you with the other person.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years? What kinds of excitement are you looking to take on?

I think ahead and I get excited. I see adventure in travel for work and personal. Success in television as well as being part of some quality movies. A directing or producer credit along with song writing. I see creating a foundation that will serve the different charities and causes close to my heart, that other people can be involved in. Maybe by year 10, I'll get a dog. Things might be more settled by then.

10 Things About Abigail Klein

Abigail Klein is the gorgeous blonde who hails from Dallas, Texas (where she was a part of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders). She will appear alongside Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Adam Samberg (SNL), and Adam Sandler (Funny People, etc) in the new comedy "That's My Boy" out on June 15, 2012. We sat down with Klein to learn 10 new things about her.

How did you get to become part of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders? I have always been a Cowboys fan and I loved dancing and performing so I thought, why not? I auditioned in May 2007 as I was finishing high school. I didn't mention it to anyone besides my parents at first. Once I made it to training camp for the summer, I shared my excitement with all my friends and family who were all so supportive. Finally in August right before the first game, they officially announced the team. I was so happy and proud!

What is something people don't know about being a professional cheerleader? Being a part of the most iconic cheerleading squad ever was an exhilarating experience and a great honor. Performing at Cowboys stadium was so much fun. I made my closest friends while being a part of the organization for those three years. It was pretty much the ultimate sorority. I'm forever bonded with women who cheered in the early 1970s when the squad first began. There are so many meaningful aspects of being an NFL cheerleader. I was able to do several appearances with children's foundations like A Wish With Wings and visit Children's Hospital in Dallas. I met children facing heartbreaking illness and was able to be part of their team of encouragement. I am in awe of how brave these kids are. I also had the privilege of performing overseas for our troops with the USO. Joining the team as a rookie, I had no idea the involvement we could have and the significance of our commitment. I was fortunate enough to travel to Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan in December of 2009 on a USO tour. I'll never forget meeting such courageous men and women who were so sweet and beyond hospitable. I hope they were as touched even half as much as I was. I'll always be grateful to them.

If your friends were to use just a few words to describe you, what would they be? I think they'd describe me as a happy, fun-loving person who's obsessed with Nutella!

If you could be in any kind of band, which band would it be and what instrument would you play? I love the 1940s Big Band era and the jazz sound of that time. I'd play the saxophone.

When did you begin taking dance classes? At the age of nine, I began taking everything from ballet and lyrical to jazz, hip hop, and tap.

Do you have any interesting hobbies? On cloudy, rainy days (though they are rare) I like to paint. I also like trying new recipes. I make a really mean basil pesto mozzarella grilled cheese. I also enjoy playing the guitar. I'm definitely a beginner so I learn how to play country songs since they're usually only three or four chords!

What are some of your favorite films? I grew up watching "Nightmare Before Christmas" every year with my family. That's when I became a huge Tim Burton fan. And of course as almost every woman would say, I will always love "The Notebook." I read the book before seeing the movie, and it was one of the rare times when I enjoyed the movie more than the book. Recently, I just added "The Avengers" to one of my favorite films. Sitting in my seat while watching didn't feel right. Instead I wanted to be jumping up and down rooting for the heroes! I literally got goosebumps before the final action scene. A bit dorky maybe...but wow! I love it.

What kind of projects are you looking to take on in the future? Who would you want to work with? I want to try anything and everything. I think training for an action thriller would be fun and challenging. I'd absolutely love to work with Betty White some day! She's charming and talented. You instantly fall in love with her, and that trait in particular can't be taught.

Now that you're out in LA, what are your favorite places to be so far? I adore living in LA. I like to hike in Hollywood and hang out at the beach in Malibu. I love the fact that in LA you can drive a couple hours and hit the slopes for a day of skiing. I also really love that there are countless restaurants to try all the time. Good food and good weather are my favorite perks about living in the city. It's an incredible place to live in.

What is your most favorite quote...whether or not you live by it? Eleanor Roosevelt said, "The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience." It's a quote that I want to live by for the rest of my life. It relates to everything - career, relationships, and life in general.
