This is Me: Riley Smith

Riley, our "This is Me" feature is meant to learn about you - we want to find out more about your career and about your personal life as well. You've been in a ton of television shows - what is it like to explore so many different sets and meet that many people? I've always felt fortunate to have been apart of so many different shows and films throughout the years. In some ways, there is something nice and comforting about doing one role or job for a long period of time, but in a lot of ways, it's exciting and fresh to have stints on so many different shows. I'm like a journey man, just traveling through a lot of peoples lives. It's hard when you get on a really great set and have to leave, but the business is so small and I have had the pleasure to work with a lot of the same great people multiple times.

You were also in our all-time favorite, "Freaks and Geeks." Essentially, most talents from that show is somewhere higher than they were then. What is your take on that? Are you surprised as to how loyal the fan base was even if the show only lasted a season? I think every one that was apart of that show could feel they were apart of something special at the time, but I don't think anyone (including me) realized how iconic it would become. Or how far so many of the people involved would go. I consider myself really lucky to have been apart "Freaks and Geeks" for the short time it was around and all the years its lived on.

You now have a recurring role on CW's hit show "90210." Knowing that the show has been around for a while, what were your expectations of the position? Before signing on? And what have you discovered about the people and the show that you hadn't known before? I knew going in that the cast and crew would be tight knit and close. My pre-conceived idea was that they may be a bit "clique-y", which is a little intimidating, but they weren't at all. They are a very close big family and so humble and sweet. It's been one of the most enjoyable sets I've been apart of.

Talk to us about your music! Where are you hoping to take it in the next few years? Are you still recording? Anything new we can expect to hear soon? I started a band with 3 best friends back in 06' called THE LIFE OF RILEY. The style is singer songwriter/pop. It's really just an outlet for me to express my feelings, thoughts and ideas. Another artistic outlet in between acting gigs. We are independent and intend to stay that way so that we can do things at our pace and vision. We have been fortunate enough to have played all over the world and even got to open for Jordan Sparks, which was a really cool experience on a bigger stage. We are about to release our third album titled "By The Way" this December. All the albums are avail on iTunes and all the multimedia outlets. In fact, I just got back from a 10-day tour across Europe supporting the record release over there. It's always a great crowd across the pond and we love playing over there!

Among all the roles you've portrayed, what has been your favorite and why? Was it the cast? The job itself, etc? I have so many favorites for so many different reasons. "24" will always be one of those at the top. It was a highly acclaimed show that was written and done so well. My season (3) was at the height of its popularity, so there was a lot of excitement with that. And the role of Kyle Singer, was such a high intensity role every single second, which made it so fun to play. "Radio" will also hold a special place in my heart forever. To get to work with 3 Oscar nominees/winners on a daily basis was such a great learning experience and opportunity for me at that age. I grew up a lot during that film and took so many lessons from it. I also, think the movie had a great message to the audience, which makes me proud to be a part of it. And I can't forget "Mottocrossed." Although it was a teen Disney movie, it did so much for me on a public level. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was iconic for that generation. And not many people can say that were apart of something like that. For years I shied away from that, but now that I'm older, I sort of embrace it and feel blessed to have had that opportunity.

"Not Another Teen Movie" was another one of those films that gave so many of us our breaks and I think holds a place in a lot of peoples DVD collection. So I cannot forget that one.

A movie called "Weapons" I did will always resonate with me. It was a gritty indie film I fought for because I knew it had a great voice and would do well. I got it, shot it and it did just that at Sundance. To see that come together like it did, was a really cool thing to watch unfold.

There's been a lot of great pilots that have not made the air that I thought were great and was proud to be a part of as well. Recently there have been so many, but when projects are so fresh, they are hard to be favorited. Sometimes you dont realize how special they are until you get time to sit back and reflect.

I do feel like "90210" has come along at the right time in my life and playing a paraplegic character is a great opportunity that doesn't come across your desk everyday. Being able to give that demographic a voice has been an honor. So I know that someday I'll look back at this role and be proud of the role and work.

Now tell us, what are some of the things you are just obsessing over right now? Besides the Election a few weeks ago of course!

The Holidays. I'm a big fan of this time of year. The changing of the weather, the love that's in the air during the holiday season. The sports on TV. You've got the end of Football season which is always exciting, mixed with the beginning of Basketball season. So my weekends are pretty much booked in front of the TV with Sports. Its just a great time of year!

5 things on your bucket list...?

Wow, thats a tough one. I try to live everyday to the fullest and if I want to do something "someday," I usually just do it "now." I'm scared of heights so jumping out of a plane is out of the question. I would like to run with the Bulls though. I tried to scuba dive in the BVI a few years back and failed. It's a long story, but I basically got down there, got claustrophobic, forgot how to breath and had to come up. So I'd like to work on that and then go swim with Sharks. It seems so peaceful down there in the ocean, but it's a fear that I haven't been able to overcome as of yet.

I'd love to sit courtside for and NBA finals game, behind home plate for the World Series and front row for Super Bowl. So if there is anyone reading this that can help facilitate that, I'm all ears!

What would be a total dream job for you?

Exactly what I'm doing. I love my job. I get to be the voice of a different person with every show I take.

If you could give your younger self advice, what would it be?

Don't let the highs get too high or the lows get too low. And when things are at their best, stay hungry. There is always someone ready to take your place.

In the next 5 years, where do you see yourself? What are some of your goals?

I want to continue to grow as a person and as an artist. The more layers I can peel off of both the more I can give to the world.

Where ever that takes me is where I'm suppose to be. It's my job to just make the best of it and enjoy it to the fullest.

This is Me: Edwin Hodge

Edwin, this feature is simply to learn new things about you - we want to discover more about your career and about your personal life as well. Could you tell us a little bit about where you grew up (New York)? What was the atmosphere like? How do you think growing up where you did, affect your decision to become an actor?

I split most of my life on the East coast between New York and New Jersey. It wasn't the most polished lifestyle, but my mom did a great job to make sure that we stayed on a straight path to maintaining moral values and making sure we lived a life filled with a variety of diverse opportunities to become the person we wanted to be. My environment didn't really affect my decision to be an actor. I kind of just fell into it along with the different sports I've played, instruments I've tried to learn to play and whatever else sparked my interest.

Your younger brother Aldis is also an actor. How did you both get started in acting? Did you begin your acting career before him or after? What are the good and bad aspects of having a family member in the same industry? Is there ever competition? I started my career at the age of three and my brother followed a year after. I don't think there are any bad aspects to having a sibling in the same business. At least not for us. We've always been very supportive even when we were each others competition. Our main goal is to support our family and that trumps any jealously that one would probably have. We've been very different actors from the beginning. If anything, we've helped each other more by learning from one another.

Now, you have a new film (The Purge) coming out. Could you talk to us about your experience filming that movie and what it felt like working alongside some well-known actors like Ethan Hawke? It was truly the first time I felt like a I had a say in how my character should be portrayed and how he should guide the film. Ethan was very generous in allowing my opinions to be heard, which is unheard of with some actors I've worked with. The whole cast was amazing to be honest. The director, producers, and crew simply made the experience of working on this film one that will set the tone for how I would like to work on the rest of my future projects.

What are some life-changing lessons you've learned throughout your experience as an actor? The biggest lesson I've learned is to stay humble. We are privileged to do what we do as entertainers and I respect the fact that it is the fans that keep our careers going. We touch people's lives in ways we never think we could and it's our duty to uphold a positive image outside of our career though we may portray negative images within our career. We can be here today and gone tomorrow. Staying humble has gotten me far and I plan on staying that way. It makes the work environment that much better for me.

Where do you live now? How does it differ from home? I live in Los Angeles now. It's different in many ways when it comes to lifestyle, people, food and its environmental influences. I'm not knocking LA, but I'm a New Yorker at heart and forever will be.

Tell us, what is a seemingly typical day for you? Do you have some sort of routine that you abide by from morning to night? If I can be on a golf course seven days a week, that would be fine by me. I love riding my motorcycle, cooking, writing, and simply being spontaneous. A typical day for me when I'm not auditioning would be sitting at home with the golf channel or cartoon network on and writing screenplays. I love to hang out with my friends doing simple things like going to the movies and pot luck dinners. I'm a simple guy. I'm not really into the club scene or being everywhere the cameras are. I like my privacy.

You must have a lot of favorite things to do -- I mean, what kinds of hobbies, TV shows, etc have you been enjoying? Have you been obsessing over the Election? I'm so happy that the election is over! I seen a lot things I didn't like in this election and even lost some friends over it. It's sad, but ignorance is bliss for some I feel. I'm addicted to watching The Mentalist, The Walking Dead, any PGA Tournament and of course my brother's show Leverage. Adult Swim is my guilty pleasure.

If you could have been a part of any movie of the past, what would it be and why? How do you think that expresses who YOU are? I think I would have like to have been involved in the Beetlejuice film. It was my favorite film growing up and it's simply a classic in my opinion. It's was funny, creepy and who doesn't like to dance to that iconic song every time it comes on!

Are there skills you are dying to achieve? Such as playing guitar, etc. Becoming a scratch golfer would be an ultimate goal that I'd love to achieve one day. I'd addicted to golf. Seriously! I'm also learning how to play the bass guitar, drums, and produce music with a friend of mine.

In the next 5 years, where do you see yourself? What are some of your goals? I would love to be an accomplished writer and own a lounge one day. I want to start a family in a few years and hope that at the end of it all and the choices that I've made that I achieve happiness for myself and those around me.

Just Another Day with Pia Toscano

When Pia Toscano left American Idol last year, a nation of dedicated viewers were shocked. As a judge favorite from the beginning, many expected her to continue to the finals, but instead she was voted off and placed ninth. Regardless, Pia had quickly become a household name and left behind her career as a wedding singer. This series of ups and downs has continued for Toscano since, with roles in Glee being written for her, and then taken away, and a record deal signing, that then fell apart. But, it now seems that 2013 will finally be the time when Pia can take back that carrot that Hollywood has been dangling in front of her. With a new album on a new record label, a role in a new movie, and offers coming in from every direction, Toscano may finally be getting a real chance. Francesca Nicol recently caught up with Pia to found out how her life has been changing. You'll be singing the national anthem at the NFL international series in London in October which is very exciting; will you be playing any other dates in Europe? I will just be singing the National Anthem for this trip. Hopefully soon I will get the chance to return and perform some songs from my upcoming album.

Do you have any favorite places to travel? On tour we got to see some pretty cool places, I loved traveling to Manila. The Filipino culture is very kind and very appreciative of our music.

Your role in Grace Unplugged was your first ever acting job, how did you prepare for such a transition? My role in Grace Unplugged was small, and I am glad it was because it was a great starting point for me. Acting in an audition and memorizing lines is very different from being in the moment and making that come to life with the other actor. My scene was with the incredible Kevin Pollak. I was so nervous at first, but Kevin really put me at ease. He was very nurturing and I learned as we went along.

The character of Alyssa was written for you, and was loosely based on you, what similarities can viewers see between you and Alyssa? I don’t want to give too much of the story away so you’ll just have to wait and see but I’m honored that my story was inspiring to them and that it’s played a part in someone’s creative process – I hope I can continue to inspire people creatively.

What kind of experience was it? Will you be doing any more acting in the future? Grace Unplugged was the most amazing experience for me. For my first film, I couldn't have asked for a better start and group of people to work with. At first, I was a little intimidated being around such accomplished actors but everyone just made me feel so comfortable. After my album is complete, I would love to start taking acting classes and audition for more roles.

Your new album has long been in the works, what can fans expect from it? The album I am creating now finally feels like "ME." The timing is right, my team is incredible, and I just couldn't be happier. The album is going to be powerful, anthemic, and fun.

Who are some of your favorite artists? Can we feel any influence from these in your sound? I love those big ol' voices that give you instant chills like Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Sia, Beyonce and I love the edge Rihanna has. You'll definitely feel some influences from these artists, but we are creating "my" sound for this album.

Your career has seen some trials and tribulations, how do you manage to stay positive, and push further? Without the trials and tribulations there is no story to tell. For me, the more "No"s I hear the more I want to work even harder to prove those people wrong and show them what I am capable of. Also, it helps you to grow as an artist and makes you a stronger person. The right timing is everything to me. So I feel if something isn't working out, it's not God's plan for me, or he as something better in mind.

What is something that never fails to perk you up? Sometimes when I am down my mom sends me pictures of my dog Chloe with cute little captions and it makes me smile. Also, my best friend Cassie never fails at making me laugh. She is my rock.

What little things inspire you? Everything around me inspires me. Music first and foremost. The hard workers around me, my family and friends, especially my sister. Constructive criticism inspires me to better myself.

What are your goals for 2013? I see great things for 2013. The number 13 is very special and symbolic for me because it is my connection to my Grandpa Jay. My goals are to continue to work really hard on my music, to keep raising the bar, to tour, travel to places I've never been, to take more risks and to be fearless.

What are some of your long term dreams in life? What would be your, 'I've made it' moment? That moment for me would be singing the national anthem for the Super Bowl and winning a Grammy.

When you have days off, how do you spend your time? Do you have any hobbies or pastimes? When I have days off I like to relax. I like to go to nice quiet dinners and the movies. I love the sun and luckily I have a really nice pool area so when I have a day off I usually chill there.

What is something you make sure to do everyday? Something I make sure I do everyday is smile... and talk to my family.
