Today, Kelsey and Talon from Feather & Twine begin documenting their amazing road trip in celebration of Kelsey's birthday! Enjoy their adventures, and let us know if their trip makes you want to hop in a jeep and go for a ride too!

----------

We decided pre-trip that we would have a journal going during each phase of the road-trip to make the writing process easier. Fast forward to trip time, and of course, making any time to write in the journal was promptly thrown out the car window. There’s so much to say about the trip that I’m having a hard time articulating. There was a lot of road time, which was spent reading (on my end) and dreaming (between the two of us); being creatives, the downtime was so refreshing and igniting. If you’ve never taken a road-trip before, I highly recommend it. So, the following is my attempt to convince you to take a road-trip right this second. We drove from Dallas, TX (where we currently reside), to Santa Fe, to the Grand Canyon, to Joshua Tree National Park, down to Palm Springs, up to to Tucson, to White Sands National Park, to El Paso, down to Marfa, then back up to Dallas. In a week.

There are many phases you go through when on a road-trip. If you’ve been on one, I’m sure you can identify with these feelings, especially when you’re dreaming up a blog post for it.

Pre-trip: You have all these ideas about what you’re going to do, to film, to photograph, to write. We had hundreds of shots in our heads, and concept-ing the video turned in to quite a hobby over the two weeks preceding our trip.

Day before the trip: You realized you haven’t actually packed anything at all, so you scramble around trying to fit a week’s prep into a few hours...suddenly realizing you can’t just throw stuff in the car and be done with it. This is when Talon decided we would leave at 4am in order to reach Santa Fe at a reasonable hour.

Trip day: Our conversation went a little like this—(Kelsey): “Wow, we slept right through that 4am alarm... what time do you want to leave now?” (Talon): “Let’s just go back to sleep and leave when we wake up.” (Spoiler alert: We left at 11am.)

The first day was mainly filled with getting out of Texas. While west Texas contains a simplistic beauty, I tend to understate the time it took to get through. We also got stuck in a giant windstorm that was actually so big it had been named. You can imagine how much more interesting driving through west Texas became when there was so much dirt flying in front of us, we couldn't see anything that was more than 10 yards away.

As we drove into New Mexico, we were greeted by the brightest navy skies I have ever seen at dusk. I felt like I was in a moodier version of Van Gogh's “Starry Night,” watching the black road illuminated only by our headlights as they swished across my frame of sight. Cutting through the swirls of blue was absolutely mesmerizing. A site I won't soon forget.

New Mexico was filled with eating. Dinner - Maria’s New Mexican Kitchen Hotel - The Lodge at Santa Fe Breakfast - Tia Sophia’s

We seriously loved everything we tried in Santa Fe, which is why I wanted to be sure to notate it. We woke up the morning of my birthday and drove to Tent Rocks (Kasha- Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument) for some morning climbing. What an amazing drive to a perfect place. In the video, you’ll see most of our clips are from there! We were so inspired by the different textures of the slot canyon, and the way the light fell on the different sections of our hike. If you're a texture person like I am, you'll love this place. If you ever get a chance to go, you must! It was an easy but unforgettable hike. One thing we really noticed was how fast everyone was moving through the canyon. It was sad to see people focused solely on getting to the top as quickly as possible, without even stopping for a second to see the beauty that surrounded them! Even if you’ve been somewhere a million times, it’s so easy to forget to find beauty in everything.

After our hike, we ate peanut butter sandwiches out of the trunk of our car and then set off!

Onward to the Grand Canyon! See our next adventure in tomorrow's post!

How to Throw a Themed Exchange Party

Zooey Magazine, Party Zooey Magazine, Party

As a wardrobe stylist and blogger for Art in the Find Styling in San Diego, I am constantly looking for ways to connect ladies together as part of my business. I love what I do as a stylist. Part of that comes from putting together a great party and seeing the happiness on women’s faces when surrounded by stylish goodies in a fun environment. Lately, the exchange party trend has been spreading around. I mean, who doesn’t love a good party? And a great swap of clothes, accessories, or home goods? You don’t have to spend much and you get a bunch of great gently used, now newly loved, goodies for you or your home. Having just recently thrown my own La Bonne Vie French inspired Accessory Exchange at a boutique in San Diego, I wanted to share with you a few tips to inspire you to host a fun, successful exchange of your own!

Tip 1: Think Ahead

Decide what to exchange, what do you have extra of? Books? Accessories, tops, shoes? All of these can be used for a themed exchange! Give yourself at least a month to plan and time for gals to gather up goodies to exchange.

Pick a theme & invite a small number of participants - Once you’ve decided what you want to exchange, make it pop by picking a theme. Use Pinterest for inspiration and develop snacks, drinks, and decor around that theme. Make signs, invites, desserts, all centered around the theme for a cohesive event.

Tip 2: Be Personal

As you’re planning, think about ways you can make your exchange a bit more personal...Create cloth napkins out of fabric rather than using paper napkins. Or use a variety of glassware to create an eclectic mix, rather than plastic cups. It makes the exchange feel much more personal and your guests will appreciate it!

Tip 3: Plan, Adapt, and Ask for Help Along the Way Initiate to-do lists and ask for help (you can’t do it alone!), Have lists for decor, another for food to buy, make, and an additional one for set-up items. Check off items from your list and be ready to make changes and adjust your lists as the event draws near.

Ask a few people if they would be willing to assist you in the prep & set up, and take-down. This way, you’ll be able to enjoy the event that much more because you’ve delegated small tasks to helpers rather than trying to do it all on your own!

Tip 4: Be In the Moment - The Party is Starting!

Before the party starts, have drinks pre-poured & set up ahead of time for guests to enjoy when they arrive.

A great intro is everything! Create a fun “menu” of directions for the exchange to pass out to guests or as a list written out on a chalkboard so that it is easy to see and understand.

As an icebreaker, have a great introduction theme game or cute name tags to get your guests warmed up! Prep goodie bags for guests to stash all their newly loved items they’ve scored!

Once all the lists are checked off, your party is set up, and your guests have arrived, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the exchange. Bon Fete!

Silver Lake Adventures with Katie Dean

Silver Lake, Los Angeles - Zooey Magazine Today, we present to you... our Silver Lake adventure guided by Katie Dean, a local jewelry designer! Silver Lake is a popular Los Angeles neighborhood that sits on around Los Angeles' reservoir (hence 'lake'). If you're ever heading towards East Los Angeles then these six locations are a must-visit. It's perfect for afternoon strolls, date nights, and sightseeing! We hope you like our mini-tour guide of this beautiful Los Angeles area!

Silver Lake, Los Angeles - Zooey Magazine

Broome Street General Store: 2912 Rowena Ave, LA, 90039

Broome Street General Store is my favorite coffee spot! Needless to say, their lattes are delicious. But, why I really love going here is because there are also tons of home goods, clothes, greeting cards, specialty candies and goodies everywhere. They make the whole experience so fun! They also have a really sweet courtyard area where I can conduct a brainstorming or networking meeting.

Raven Spa: 2910 Rowena Ave, SilverLake, CA 90039

When you walk into Raven Spa, you feel like you've been transported from the busy streets of Los Angeles to a Bali resort. The ambiance is truly authentic and relaxing. It's a perfect place to unwind after a really crazy week, or it's also a great reward for yourself - perhaps when you reach your latest goal! My personal favorite is the custom massage.

The Res: 1854 To 2246 Silver Lake Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90026

I feel really lucky to have a place like the Silverlake Reservoir so close. Since I grew up in Michigan, I love being outside and the “Res” allows me to exercise and catch up with my girlfriends. It's multitasking at its finest!

Flore: 3818 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90026

Flore is a great vegan restaurant to grab lunch at. The food is fresh and they have delicious sweet treats (with an assortment of fruit sweetened and gluten free options). You can also sit outside, which I love. My favorite dishes are the Basmati Brown Rice Bowl with tofu and a lightly heated Cinnamon Roll. You can thank me later!

Casbah Cafe: 3900 W Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA

Casbah Cafe is gorgeous! I have a weakness for anything with a Moroccan feel, and this place is exploding with bright colors and patterns. They also have an outside space with the most adorable sitting nooks surrounded by beautiful vine plants. When you sit down, you feel like you're in a private place where no one can see you. Great for people watching and brainstorming new ideas over a wonderful cup of tea.

Clementine Floral Works: 3936 W Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA

Lastly, Clementine Floral Works. For me, flowers are an essential part of my creative space. This shop is perfection. When you walk in, you immediately see the expertly curated collection of the most unique and wonderful single stems as well as stunning arrangements.

We hope you are able to visit these six Silver Lake shops! Let us know if you do! We'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for checking out my guide! - Katie Dean
