It looks like the show is a big hit among teenagers. Why do you think that is? What makes "Switched at Birth" so addicting?
It's really the first time a show like this has been done. We're working hard every day to bring
our best performances and we really get along while working. I think you can see the love. I think our drama is darn dramatic with a hint of funny moments. Ultimately the show is about family and loving the people you are with but you get this window into another culture and world that most people wouldn't otherwise be exposed to.
What exactly drew you to this role and this show? What aspects about your character and the opportunity that captivated you? The first time I read the script I was very impressed how well the deaf culture was represented and truthful the relationships were. You have two families that both want the same thing and yet they have to learn to compromise for the benefit of both girls. I identified with how strong Daphne is. She's learned a lot over the years. She has a very strong relationship with her mom, she plays basketball, and cooks, and those are all things I also like to do with my free time.
How difficult is to live with Ménière's disease? Especially when you are also an actor who constantly films on set? Some days are more challenging than others. I'm very fortunate in that I get to work with a great group of people who are very understanding. Meniere's is a disease that gets worse over time, so for now I can just take a breather and try to get back to work. My attacks tend to happen more at night, so that's helpful also. It's hard to complain though. Without it, I wouldn't be able to play this role.
Has this condition ever prevented you from doing what you wish to do? No. It's only as limiting as you let it be. Most people are completely unaware of my Meniere's and I'm excited to be able to educate people on what it means and what they can do to help find a cure.
Do your onscreen parents have any parallels to your own parents? You mean other than Lea looking more like she's related to me than my own mom? Haha, I'd like to think they are similar. DW is charming and witty. Constance is strong and smart. Lea is kind and silly. All good qualities to have.
With the fall season coming up, are there any shows you are looking forward to seeing? Right now I'm obsessed with Wilfred. I'm excited for Alcatraz, Fringe, Walking Dead, and Community.
How about movies coming up? Crazy Stupid Love and The Muppets for now.
What would you say is your biggest goal after finishing this season of "Switched at Birth?" I just want to keep working and hopefully continue to be entertaining. I think Switched At Birth is off to such a great start and it's so much fun to do, I hope we have a long fun filled future!!
